10 Clever Uses Of Baking Soda

Jul 10, 2015 //

Baking soda has many uses, several of which don’t involve cooking at all. It’s incredibly versatile, so having it around can help out in a pinch. We’ve put together our top 10 favorite uses for baking soda you can use in your everyday life.

1. Calm Your Stomach

If you have an upset stomach, you may be able to remedy with a little baking soda. Just dissolve ½ teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water and drink it. It’s not as effective as an antacid, but it will help for a while. The baking soda will neutralize your stomach acid and calm it down.

2. Put Out A Fire

This one sounds a little strange, but it actually works. Just dump baking soda on the fire, and it should go out. That’s because baking soda releases carbon dioxide gas when it is heated, which suffocates the flames. The only problem is that you’ll need a lot of baking soda to put out a small fire, so try to find a fire extinguisher first.

3. Toothaches

If you are having a toothache but you can’t get to a dentist, try using baking soda. Just dissolve baking soda into a warm cup of water, then dip a cotton swab into it and apply to the aching area. It will help with the pain, but you should be sure to make an appointment with a dentist for a more long-term fix.

4. Use As Dry Shampoo

If your hair is sweaty and disheveled and you need to fix it fast, try rubbing a little baking soda evenly through your hair, then brush until you can’t see any powder. It will work similarly to the way dry shampoos work; absorbing liquids and freshening the hair. You should still wash and shampoo your hair regularly, but this solution will work on the fly.

5. Ease Itchy Skin

If you have dry or sunburned skin, get a little relief with a baking soda bath. Just add a couple cups of baking soda to your bath. That will cause the pH level of the water to increase. The outer dead layer of your skin will be more easily removed, leaving your skin feeling smooth.

6. Clean A Car Battery

If your car battery is covered in white stuff, you should clean it right away. That gunk is called sulfuric acid, and it can burn your skin, not to mention the fact that your battery won’t run as well as it should when its contacts are covered in the stuff. To get rid of it, sprinkle some baking soda on the acid, then use an old toothbrush and chemical resistant gloves to scrub it off. The baking soda will neutralize the acid, making it easy to clean off.

7. Clean Tarnish Off Silver

You can clean tarnish off your silverware easily with baking soda. Just place the tarnished silver in a pan lined with aluminum foil, then sprinkle baking soda over the utensils. Pour boiling water in until you have covered all the silver, and wait for the tarnish to transfer to the aluminum.

8. Freshen Up Your Carpet Or Rugs

This is a great trick to keep your carpets clean and smelling fresh. Just sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, especially on a dirty or smelly area right before you go to bed. In the morning, vacuum it up thoroughly. Your carpet will look cleaner than ever, and the whole room will smell better.

9. Brighten A Dull Floor

If your laminate kitchen floor is getting dull, give it some extra life with baking soda. Just dissolve ½ cup baking soda into a bucket of warm water and mop the floor with it. After you’re done, rinse the floor and let dry. Your kitchen floor will shine like new.

10. Clean Your Coffee Maker

With repeated use and irregular cleaning, your coffee machine can start to get a little crusty. Clean it by running it with baking soda in place of coffee. It’s not a perfect fix, but it will leave your coffee machine cleaner than it was.
