How to Regain Energy After Sex

Do you feel wiped out after sex? There are a few things you can do to help restore your energy levels after a roll in the hay.

1. Go to Sleep

Sleep is the best way to regain energy after either an intense workout or sexual activity. If you’re getting less than six hours a night, you’re not giving your body a full chance to recover from physical activity. If you continue losing sleep over a period of time, you’ll be mentally and physically weaker. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep, but everyone's different – you may need up to 9.

2. Hydrate

This is a good idea before sex too – dehydration can take your energy away and lead to a lessened physical performance. Research has shown that dehydrated athletes have a more difficult time completing a weight lifting workout. So drink up – both to power your performance and to recover afterward. Your urine should be clear or pale yellow. If it’s darker, drink more water.

3. If You’re Hungry, Have a Healthy Snack

You know that some foods leach on your energy, so be sure not to reach for them when you’re trying to recover. Processed, sugary foods like cereal, cake, white bread or pasta will leave you feeling more tired. The quick rise and fall in your blood sugar levels will zap your energy. Don’t go for fast food, either – fried foods attack your energy level by putting your digestive system in overdrive. If you’re hungry, reach for whole grains, complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, healthy fats, and fresh fruits and veggies. Try spinach, freshly brewed tea, chia seeds, watermelon, apples, ginger, seafood or eggs. These foods are so good for you, they may even lead to a second round of sex.

4. Exercise Lightly

Whether it’s right afterward or the next morning, light exercise is a good way to regain energy. A University of Georgia study found that people who did low-intensity aerobic activity three times a week had less fatigue than those who did higher intensity workouts. So skip the big gym session and go for a leisurely walk instead.

5. Give and Receive a Massage

Massage is relaxing and it improves circulation. There are two ways you and your partner can experience this together: either by giving each other massages with your hands or by investing in a few foam rollers and stretching your muscles together.

It’s important to take care of yourself by listening to your body’s needs. If you’re exhausted, going to sleep is probably the best option. If it’s daytime or too early for sleep, try a healthy snack or light exercise instead. Be as good to yourself as you just were to your partner.
