10 Ways to Put the Fun in Fitness

Let’s face it. Sometimes we just don’t feel like working out. Maybe it’s cold outside, or we’ve had a taxing day at work. Logically we understand that exercise is important and you have to admit that while being in a regular workout routine life does seem a lot better. But what can we do to put more fun into our workouts? Here are 10 ways to put the fun back into your fitness!

1. Create a Soundtrack

Choose a playlist of upbeat, energetic tunes to work out. The right music in the background can be very motivating. It can also add a lot of fun to an otherwise average workout. If you enjoy comedy, put some sound bites of your favorite stand-up comedian in with your music. The person on the treadmill next to you may wonder why you keep bursting into laughter, but don’t let that stop you!

2. Get a Workout Buddy

When you choose a workout partner, pick one of your friends who has a great attitude as well as a fantastic sense of humor. Working out is challenging and can sometimes be frustrating or dampen your mood. But with an upbeat, fun workout partner, your mood and your buns can both be lifted!

3. Dress to De-Stress

When you choose your workout outfit, what do you usually wear? Instead of the same old dri-fit apparel, why not choose a t-shirt with funny workout-themed sayings or images? Here are some funny examples:

  • “Sweatin’ like a sinner in Church!”
  • “Slow runners make fast runners look good. You’re Welcome!”
  • “This isn’t sweat. I’m just leaking Awesome!”
  • “Sweat is just my fat crying!”
  • “I wear black to work out. It’s a funeral for my fat!”

4. Be a Flirty Girl

Ok, ladies, this is for you. If you haven’t heard of Flirty Girl classes, girl you are in for a treat. Flirty Girl’s motto is “you’ve got it, now flaunt it!” The workouts range from club-style dancing to pole fitness. Not only do you get a killer bod from these workouts, it is a great way to add some spice and definitely fun to your workouts!

5. Try Something New

If you have been doing the same workout routine for a while now, one way to up the fun factor is to switch things up a bit. If you’re a runner, try a yoga class. If you’re a weight lifter, try a spin class. It’s ok if you’re not good at it on the first try – that’s part of the fun! Learning something new is good for your brain, anyway!

6. Join a Class

Group exercise is typically more fun than going it alone. In a class you feel like part of a team almost. Having an instructor lead you through a workout can also be a lot of fun, especially if they have a positive and energetic attitude. Great attitudes are contagious!

7. Go Out Dancing

According to a study done by Harvard Health Publications, someone who weighs 125 pounds burns about 180 calories by club dancing for 30 minutes. Someone weighing 155 pounds can burn 223 calories for every 30 minutes. That’s some calorie torching fun for real! Now, if you’re in clubs where drinks are served have sparkling water with lemon or lime instead of alcohol. You will have just as much fun dancing and you won’t be sabotaging your efforts by drinking a bunch of calories. Now boogie!

8. Toss a Frisbee

Even if it’s a little chilly outside, put on a sweater and some comfy jeans and take a walk up to the park. Take a friend and a Frisbee. The tossing, running, bending and jumping to catch it will burn about 250 calories in an hour.

9. Take Fido Out

If you have a dog, they need exercise, too. Plus, dogs love to go for walks – some even prefer to run! Go out to the neighborhood dog park and take a tennis ball or a Frisbee with you to play catch and fetch with your furry friend. They will burn off some excess energy which improves their mood and behavior, exactly what it will do for you!

10. Play Flag Football

Next time you have friends over to watch the game, have a football aired up and ready to go. After the game you can relive your own highlight reel. Cool weather is perfect for football. If you don’t have enough people over for teams, go outside with your partner. You can burn off those beers with a little toss and catch!

Workouts definitely do not need to be boring! Besides, who couldn’t use a little more fun in their lives, right? Adding these 10 activities will liven up your workouts with lots of laughter, which burns about 40 calories every 15 minutes spent laughing! Now that’s a reason to smile!
