Anxiety Disorder: How To Get Rid Of it

It is a common misconception that anxiety disorders can be cured or gotten rid of. Everyone experiences anxiety, it is a normal part of life. An anxiety disorder, however, is a whole different animal. Anxiety disorders have a long-lasting effect, and they can get worse over time. The good news is that they are treatable, and there are lots of ways to manage them.

Talk To Your Doctor

If you think you have an anxiety disorder, your first step should be to seek professional help. Self-diagnosing is never a good idea. Get an appointment and talk to your doctor about your symptoms. They can help by referring you to a mental health professional. Talking to someone qualified to deal with your situation will absolutely help you take steps toward managing anxiety so you can lead a normal life. If at any point during the process you become uncomfortable, get out. There are other doctors and other mental health professionals, and you should find one you are comfortable with.

Find A Support Network

When you’re dealing with a mental health issue, you need people around you that are understanding and supportive. Ideally, your friends and family will fall into those categories. If not, there are ways to seek out new support groups. Find people who are empathetic to your situation and create a support network you can turn to when you need to.

You Can’t Do Everything, And That’s Okay

Anxiety disorders can be debilitating. If you find yourself in a situation you don’t think you can handle, it’s okay to bow out. Sometimes you just won’t be able to get yourself to do some of the things on this list, or anything at all. That’s okay, and it’s not your fault. Retreating to a comfortable space does not make you weak.

Organize Your Life

There are some steps you can take to organize your life that can help you to feel better every day. If you can, attempt to form good habits around eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising on a daily basis. Obviously these things can help anyone feel more balanced and stress-free, and they become even more important for someone with an anxiety disorder.

Limit Alcohol And Caffeine

Any substance which affects your mental state can trigger panic attacks and intensify your anxiety. If you just can’t live without coffee, try reducing the amount you drink each day by just one cup. Over time, drink less and less. De-caf is a good alternative to coffee, but green tea is even better.

Laugh Often

Laughter does wonders to heighten our moods, so it is a great way to manage anxiety. Hang out with funny people, and make a habit of participating in things that make you laugh. Watch a comedy on TV, or go see one in the theater. Go out with some friends to a stand-up comedy show, or reminisce with your family about that one time you laughed so hard milk came out of your nose.

Get Involved

This can be a hard one, especially for people with social anxiety, but it really helps. Get involved with groups in your community and keep yourself busy doing things you like. Staying active in social situations with a local club or group of friends is a great way to keep your spirits up and keep your mind off your worries. The first time you step into a room full of people you don’t know can be intimidating, so go with a friend to feel more comfortable. You could also look for groups of like-minded people online, where there is less social pressure.

Never Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Anxiety disorders are difficult to deal with, especially if you’re on your own. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, talk to someone and get help. You’ll be glad you did.
