Breakfast, as we all know, is a very important part of your day. As a matter of fact, breakfast is so important that it can impact the way you eat throughout the rest of your day! Luckily most people actually do eat breakfast, but there is one problem – some of the foods some of us eat early in the morning aren't any good for our waistlines. In order to avoid these traps, keep in mind these ten breakfast mistakes!
1. Too Much Cereal
I'm sure you know better than to pile on the Frosted Flakes or Lucky Charms, but no matter what cereal you choose, it is important to be portion control in mind. Just because your cereal may be whole-grain or lacking sugar doesn't mean that it's okay to grab a large bowl and indulge. You could accidentally wind up eating double – or maybe even triple – your portion size, which does nothing but pile on the calories!
2. Going Bananas At The Buffet
Pretty much everyone loves a nice buffet. However, it is very possible to over-indulge! Just as with cereal, buffets make it hard to manage portion control and constant second and third helpings. Limiting yourself to only one or two trips and only filling one plate can help you to manage your weight while still enjoying yourself!
3. Smoothie Ingredients
Despite what you may assume, not all smoothies are healthy. Some smoothies do have fruits and vegetables, but they are processed and are full of extra sugars. If you want a smoothie, make sure that you know that all of the ingredients are organic, try to substitute honey for sugar, and don't worry about the whipped cream, which adds extra calories! …okay, well whipped cream is okay every once in a while!
4. Coffee Additions
Sugar, half-and-half, and whipped cream are all popular toppings and add-ons for that Morning Joe. But these are also key ways to ring up the calories and ruin your diet! Try to gradually wean yourself off of so much sugar and cream until you are able to get the count as low as you can, without runing its taste for you!
5. Not Eating Breakfast
One of the most obvious – yet most often performed – breakfast mistakes is not eating breakfast at all! Skipping breakfast makes you more likely to snack and over-indulge throughout the day. If you just can't stand the thought of eating breakfast everyday, pack a few healthy snacks for those times of random hunger during the day. Snacks such as fruit, healthy trail mixes, or veggies will suffice!
6. Bagel Blunder
Bagels are a great breakfast food, but did you know that some bagels contain calories that can equal up to that of about five pieces of bread? And this isn't even with the cream cheese yet! Just try to either go for bagels with lower calorie counts, or substitute for wheat toast and a nut butter.
7. Juice Drinking
Juice has a higher calorie and sugar count than natural fruit juices. So in this case, try to avoid concentrate and embrace more natural fruit juices. Another option could be to simply eat the fruit and drink a glass of water.
8. Yogurt Choices
Yogurt can be a great breakfast option – if done wisely. Certain flavored yogurts can be loaded with all kinds of sugars and extra calories. Opt for plain, low-fat yogurt and add fruit or granola to taste!
9. Baked Goods
Some of the most popular breakfast foods are baked goods like muffins, donuts, or various other pastries. These treats can be chalked full of sugars, calories, and fats that can ruin your diet and cause you to snack throughout the day, due to sugar crash. Try to save these sweets for special occasions or as a reward. But if you can't help yourself, try to opt for one donut or muffin per morning and make sure to follow up with a glass of water!
10. Granola Bars
Depending completely on granola bars can do more damage to your diet than you'd think. A number of granola bars have more sugars than some sweets! Going for small nut butter sandwiches are a much better option!
