  • Split peas raw | 1.00 cup
  • Spices, allspice, ground | 0.50 tsp
  • Spices, cumin seed | 1.00 tsp, whole
  • Spices, turmeric, ground | 0.50 tsp
  • Spices, coriander | 1.00 tsp
  • Garlic, raw | 2.00 Tbsp
  • Ginger root, raw | 0.50 slices 1" dia
  • Salt | 1.00 dash
  • Onions raw | 2.00 medium 2-1/2" dia
  • Olive oil | 2.00 tablespoon

  1. In a large deep saucepan, put split peas and pour water as much as split peas are soaked and water level rises an inch extra.
  2. Give it a boil and remove froth while boiling with the help of a spoon.
  3. Add coriander, turmeric and salt. Let it cook on low flame for one hour. Cook until split peas are tender and soft but not pulpy.
  4. In the meantime, nicely chop onions, ginger and garlic.
  5. Heat oil in a wok, saute cumin seeds in it till they start to pop then add chopped onions and saute till soft and golden.
  6. Add ginger, garlic, all spice powder and stir a little.
  7. Add this sauteed mixture to boiling split peas, stir for 2 minutes then serve hot.
