Crusty French Bread Recipe

  1. Heat the oven to 425°F. Take a small bowl mix sugar, water and yeast in it and set it aside for about 10 minutes. In another bowl sift salt and flour, slowly then add yeast mixture and keep mixing till dough is formed. Place dough on a floured area and knead for 5 to 10 minutes more till dough is soft and stretchy. Now place this dough in an oiled bowl, cover the bowl and set it aside in a warm area for almost 1 hour.
  2. After an hour take the dough and knead for a few more minutes, then make two portions of it and roll both of them to an oblong with curved ends. Roll it starting from the elongated part just like a Swiss roll, then lay joint side down on a baking tray that is slightly floured.
  3. Using a fine knife put slashes on top of bread at a little distance from each. Add a pinch of salt in a beaten egg and brush it on the loaves. Let them settle for about 30 minutes in a warm place.
  4. Spread a little poppy seeds and then bake for almost 22 to 25 minutes till brown and crispy. Place on a wire rack to cool.
