- First boil the water in a saucepan, beat an egg and set both aside.
- Sift flour and salt with baking soda through a sieve or strainer. In a medium bowl, add chopped walnuts and dates and spread over the boiling water. Leave to lukewarm.
- Cream together butter and sugar until it is really fluffy. Now add egg and combine well. Put in the flour and date and walnut mixture, blend completely and finally stir in milk. Spoon in the final mixture into a greased and lightly floured 1 lb loaf pan.
- Warm up an oven to 35*F. Place the loaf pan in ovenand bake for 45 minutes or until a knife or wooden skewer inserted into the center of cake comes out clean. Turn it out and place on a wire rack to cool. Slice the loaf and serve with butter if desired.
