  • Wheat flour, white, all-purpose, unenriched | 4.00 cup
  • Cream of tartar | 2.00 tsp
  • Baking soda | 2.00 tsp
  • Butter without salt | 1.00 cup
  • Shortening, multipurpose, soybean hydrogenated and palm hydrogenated | 1.00 cup
  • Egg, whole, raw | 2.00 medium
  • Powdered sugar | 0.25 cup sifted
  • Vanilla frosting | 1.00 package 16 oz

  1. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, cream of tartar and baking soda.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the butter and shortening until fluffy. Gradually beat in powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  3. Then beat in the eggs, one at a time. Gradually fold in the flour mixture until well blended.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 4 hours.
  5. Preheat oven to 350 F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out a portion of the dough into 1/8 inch thickness, keep remaining dough chilled until ready to use.
  6. Cut out cookies with a floured cookie cutter.
  7. Place cookies 1 inch apart on kitchen parchment paper covered baking sheets.
  8. Sprinkle with colored sugar or candies as desired or leave plain to frost. Bake for 8 to 11 minutes or until set but not browned. Transfer to wire racks to cool then serve!
