DHI: A New Twist on FUE Hair Transplants

What Is DHI Choi FUE?

In classic follicular unit extraction, individual hairs are taken from a donor site on the patient’s scalp. A number of small incisions are then made on the receiver site, creating channels. DHI Choi FUE follows many of these same steps. However, it utilizes a pen-like device often referred to as a “Choi implanter”. The tip of the Choi implanter features a hollow needle. After a hair is removed from the donor site, it is carefully placed inside this needle.

Once loaded, the needle is inserted into the patient’s scalp at an angle of 45 degrees. This makes an incision and provides an opening for the follicular unit. From here, the hair is released from the pen and implanted into the channel.

Advantages

  • The DHI technique is markedly less time-consuming than many other methods of hair transplantation. On average, it is an hour faster than traditional follicular unit extraction.
  • When a Choi implanter is used, hair spends less time outside the scalp. This increases the survival rate of each extracted unit.
  • Classic FUE uses a scalpel to make incisions in the receiver site. The incisions made by a Choi implanter are much smaller than those made by a scalpel. This allows for a speedier recovery post-surgery.

Disadvantages

  • DHI Choi FUE requires a specially-trained team. This means it is not offered by many hair restoration clinics.
  • The procedure is more expensive than many of its alternatives. You should be prepared to drop several thousand dollars on DHI Choi FUE.
  • Follicular units are extremely sensitive and can be damaged easily. There is a significant chance of hair being harmed beyond use as it is loaded into the Choi implanter.

Where Is It Available?

As mentioned in the previous section, DHI hair transplants can only be performed by specially-trained surgeons. This makes it quite difficult to secure in places where hair transplantation is not a major industry. If you live in a country with only one or two hair restoration clinics, you may have to go abroad to access the treatment.
