Below are some important life lessons you can learn from hitting the gym.

You’re tougher than you think.

That 30-minute session on the bike where you maxed out the resistance may have seemed impossible at the time, but somehow, you made it through. Crushing your bench press personal best was once unthinkable — but you did that, too. Getting your body toned seemed an impossible task at the beginning, but you succeeded. 

The gym teaches you perhaps the most profound and rewarding lesson of all: that we are much tougher and much more capable than we tend to give ourselves credit for.

You have to work hard to get what you want.

It would be great if we could all just eat healthy every day and get in shape overnight.

But achieving our goals, in fitness and in life, isn’t always easy.

Our goals require effort. They require commitment. And they require hard work.

Every time you make it through the gym doors is a reminder that you’re going to have to hustle to get the things you want.

The gym teaches you humility.

Some days you walk out of the gym feeling like a total boss, head held high, with an extra bounce in your step.

But then there are those other days — you know, the ones where your feet are dragging, and no matter how much effort you throw at the workout, you’re heart just isn’t in it.

Those days stink. But they do make the good days that much more savory, and they remind us that sometimes things don’t always go our way — and that that’s okay, too.

Your routine is what dictates your results.

We are a results-oriented society. Sometimes, we get so laser-focused on a goal that we conveniently gloss over what it actually take to get us there.

The gym teaches you that it’s not always necessarily about reaching a specific health goal, but it’s really about showing up every day. It’s about putting the time in and developing a healthy routine that creates an environment where the results we want can actually happen.

Progress or die.

Okay, so that was a little dramatic.

But if you aren’t progressing, then you’re stagnating. Going to the gym regularly and upping your workouts — whether its with new routines, higher reps or stronger weights — teaches you to keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to aim for better.

Maybe you intensified your squats or did some extra core work at the tail-end of your workout. Maybe you did a few two-a-days to really push yourself. Whatever it is you’re continually striving to get better and do more, and that’s something to be proud of — at the gym (and in life).
