How does fat freezing work?

With the increasing popularity of Instagram and other social media platforms, celebrities, models, and influencers are sharing their beauty online. However, their picture-perfect bodies are unlikely naturally that way.

Some opt to use photoshop, but that, of course, does not affect one’s appearance in real life, which is one reason why non-surgical beautification treatments have increased greatly in popularity. Although many people have heard about the wondrous effects of dermal fillers and Botox, less are knowledgeable about other treatment types, such as fat freezing. So what actually is fat freezing and how does it work?

What is fat freezing?

Fat freezing does exactly what you might expect – it helps you to lose fat in targeted areas. These targeted areas can range from your thighs, your stomach, your arms, or elsewhere. The most common purpose for treatment, however, is the removal of “love handles” and “male breasts”.

Those who choose to undertake the treatment are required to sit up for up to two hours whilst suction pads work to crystallise the fat cells. The procedure is known as fat freezing because of this crystallisation, which causes you to lose fat over time. However, it’s important to realise that it can take weeks for the effects to become noticeable.

What’s the science behind it?

The fat cells in your body are more sensitive to the cold than your skin is. During the suction process, your targeted area of fat reduction is held between two cold plates. These plates then gradually reduce the temperature in order to freeze the fat cells, but not making it cold enough to freeze your skin. As a result, cell death begins to occur, without any harm to the surrounding tissue. After the treatment is over, the body will take a few weeks or even months to discard the dead fat cells.

Does the treatment really work?

Well, if your goal is to remove a targeted area of stubborn fat which you’ve been struggling to get rid of through sport and diet (such as love handles), then absolutely. However, it’s certainly not going to be your solution to an entire body makeover, and you shouldn’t think of it as being an alternative to the gym. Fat freezing is said to be able to remove up to 25% of the fat in the given area.

Are there any negative effects?

Although the treatment is generally considered to be extremely safe, there are some cases which have resulted in uneven fat removal. This is a result of human error, with the practitioner not targeting the correct areas. This is why it is extremely important to undertake the treatment with an experienced professional. Fat freezing at Springwell Clinic is known for its professionalism.

How much does it cost?

In general, fat freezing can be quite expensive, with single area treatments regularly costing more than £500. However, it’s important to note that surgical alternatives regarding fat reduction cost much more than this.
